New government rules that attempt to protect consumers are having a negative backlash. As these regulations are imposed, banks are likely to find creative ways to impose more fees on consumers. Some likely repercussions imposed by banks to offset expected financial losts are:
- Eliminating features of free checking or all together.
- Bigger minimum balances needed to qualify for free checking.
- Shorter grace periods for credit card payments.
- Higher fees on everything from certified checks to ATMs.
- Less interest given on interest earning accounts.
